Exploration 6: Alex Real

     An artist that has had an impact on my life would be the automotive designer, Henrik Fisker. He is most famous for his iconic designs for Aston Martin. Aston Martin is a British Sports car manufacturer that has a focus on luxury and performance and possess one of the most influential car designs in the history of the automotive industry thanks to Mr. Fisker. Fisker's design is widely considered to be one of the most beautifully car designs of all time. At least in the last 30 years. While that claim is certainly up for debate, I do tend to agree with it. His designs and influence on the industry as a whole has resulted in my desire to pursue a career in technical design and marketing. While Fisker may not be an artist in the traditional sense, he certainly is in the automotive industry. The combination of perfect proportions, a low center of gravity and swooping lines appeal to the human eye. This not only makes a car look good but also causes the car to sell and be desirable to the consumers who are usually very wealthy, or just aren't afraid of debt. They are in the market for a car that expresses their wealth as a form of trophy for their success.  Each variation of his design while it has been updated and tweaked here and there, has maintained the same basic geometry and proportions, making it stand the test of time better than most cars on the road today.

     Eventually Fisker decided to part ways with Aston Martin and make his own exotic car company which just carried his last name, Fisker. This business decision turned out to be a poor one as his new company was not very successful. His new designs and quality of product did not compete with the likes of his former employer in Aston Martin. They have since struggled to stay in business, causing a slight tarnishing of Fisker's legacy, however anyone who can appreciate design and automotive excellence can see the impact his craft has had on the industry. Even without his presence in the company, Aston Martin continues to develop and revise his original design as it has become synonyms with the company and has become the identity of the brand's design language.

     Some examples of comperable figures in another industry, would be someone like Hugo Boss, Kennith Cole, or even Michael Kors. These are Iconic names in the high end fashion industry who have been pioneers in terms of design and quality. Also marketed towards the wealthy and extravagant, they have a unique or new approach to the fashion industry, bringing exquisite designs and simplicity to clothing and accessories. These brand are in constant competition to come up with the next trend that will captivate consumers and the industry alike. Much like Aston Martin, attention to design has resulted in their success. The creation of something iconic in either of these fields is very rare so the fact that these have become synonymous with beauty and sophistication just speaks to the feat they were able to accomplish.
