The story that meant the most to me was the story of Dave Jenson and Lee Strunk. The two got into a fist fight over a missing jackknife. Dave Jensen was much bigger and stronger and ended up breaking Lee Strunk’s nose. When Lee returned wearing a metal splint, Dave felt awful. His guilt ate him up inside. He started to worry that Lee was going to shoot him. It was so bad to the point to where he broke his own nose just so they would be even. Shortly after that, their relationship grew stronger and they became friends. The story is interesting to me for a few reasons. One, they got into a fist fight over a jackknife which shows how the tensions and stress levels are high. Secondly, the fact that Dave broke his own nose because he felt guilty is very strange but really shows the reader just how guilty and scared he was. Lastly, after all is said and done, they end up becoming good friends, which was the last thing I expected to happen from all of this. I thought it was a very interesting story.
A character that stands out to me is Lieutenant Jimmy Cross. The pain he is feeling from missing Martha is visible. She seems to be the only thing on Cross’s mind. You can’t help but to feel bad for him and put yourself in his shoes.
I agree with exactly what you said, the fact that they were fighting over a knife just shows how high the tension levels are for these guys. They are going through so much and even a little thing like a knife has the ability to set them off. I think it is really cool that in the end it strengthened their relationship, and he ended up breaking his own nose in guilt.
ReplyDeleteYes, Tyler, it is unbelievable that they would fight over something as simple and silly as a knife. The author does a great job at telling the readers how much stress the soldiers are under.
